Pillar 6: Calling - What You're Made to Build and Contribute

One of the biggest misconceptions about calling is that it's something that you grow up knowing you’re made for.

As if one day you'll wake up, hear a trumpet sound from heaven, and suddenly know exactly what you're supposed to do for the rest of your life.

In my experience, calling rarely works that way.

Calling is usually revealed while you're already moving.

Doing something.

It's discovered through showing up to serve in an area that interests you, relationships you’re building, and opportunities that unfold along the path.

It is less about finding the perfect job and more about faithfully using what you've been entrusted with today.

Over the years, I've come to believe that calling is contribution rooted in conviction.

It's where your values, gifts, experiences, passions, and opportunities intersect.

It's how you leave your fingerprints on the people and projects around you.

Not everyone is called to a stage.

Not everyone is called to build a company.

Not everyone is called to write a book.

But every one of us is called to contribute.

The question isn't whether you have a calling.

The question is whether you're paying attention to what you’re doing that’s thriving and bringing you joy and others hope and value.

One of my favorite examples of this comes from a friendship and collaboration that began years ago.

I met my friend Paul Graeve, or "Gravy" as most people know him, at a John Maxwell event in Las Vegas. At the time, he was beginning to develop an app inspired by John Maxwell's book Today Matters.

The concept was simple but powerful.

How do we help people use their phones according to their priorities instead of allowing their phones to dictate their priorities?

Over the years, Gravy and I continued to connect. We talked about leadership, personal growth, intentional living, faith, our families, and the challenges people face when trying to live according to what matters most.

What started as conversations became collaboration.

Not because either of us was looking for a partnership.

But because our callings aligned.

His calling around technology, data, and helping people live intentionally intersected with my calling to help people live by design rather than by default.

Neither of us could have predicted where those conversations would lead.

That's often how calling works.

You faithfully steward what is in front of you.

You serve.

You build relationships.

You stay open.

And over time, doors open that you never could have forced.

That's why I believe calling is not just about work.

It's about knowing your foundational core beliefs.

It's about serving, not to perform, but from a place of genuine love and care.

It's about creating habits and boundaries around the priorities that matter.

It's about collaborating with others who are rooted and anchored as well.

How you handle what you've been entrusted with today often determines the impact you'll have tomorrow.

Many people spend years asking, "What is my purpose?"

A better question might be:

"What has been placed in my hands right now, and how can I steward it well?"

Because impact isn't built in a day.

It's built one conversation, one relationship, one opportunity, and one act of faithful friendship at a time.

When we understand our foundation, know our identity, align our lives, build healthy relationships, and care for the body we've been given, we become better equipped to contribute from a place of wholeness rather than striving.

That is where calling comes alive.

So let me leave you with this question:

What has been placed in your hands that you've just been calling in?

A relationship?

A skill?

An idea?

A business?

A dream?

An opportunity to serve?

Maybe your next step isn't finding your calling.

Maybe it's simply stewarding today's opportunities more intentionally.

Because today matters.

And what you do with today shapes the LifeStory you'll be living tomorrow.

If you're feeling pulled toward something more but aren't quite sure how all the pieces fit together, this is exactly the kind of work we do at the Growth Table.

Together, we help you discover what matters most, align your life around it, and build a path toward the contribution you were created to make.

The next Growth Table begins in the fall, and I'd love to help you define and design your next chapter.

Helping you live your great LifeStory,

TRACI 😊
